LATTES

The ancient port of Lattara, 5 kms from Montpellier, dates back to the Gallo-Roman period. Today, it has become an original stopover thanks to its architecture. Its archelogical museum at the heart of the dias and its XIIth century church are witnesses to its historical past.

MARMANDE

The twon is located a few kilometers from the canal, and is easily accessible by bicycle. The river Garonne has been generous to the town and its many surrounding gardens and orchards. Marmande is France's tomatoe and strawberry capital. The famous statue " the love apple " is its symbol.

CASTELSARRASIN

Stop in Marseillan to discover the special charm of the old Phocean town founded in 537 BC. You can linger in front of the oldest statue of the French republic (Marianne), and visit La Halle aux Oiseaux (the Hall of Birds) before lazily sunbathing on Marseillan-beach.

FRONTIGNAN

This town is known all over the world for its sweet and natural white wine " Muscat " to be drunk chilled at cocktail parties ... but don't over do it ! A port of call is to be opened next year, but today, you can enjoy the very unusual surroundings of both " étangs " (natural salt water lake) and salt-marshes on the outskirts of the town and the canal. TUNNEL DU MALPAS

A problem arises for Riquet. How to by-pass the Ensérune mountain . Stubborn and in spite of the reluctance of Colbert, he undertakes the digging of a tunnel through the sandy hill. Nobody believes it can be done. Listening to no one, he completes the work and creates a very modern 168m-long work of art.
